The Wisdom of Doing Art:
Research shows that the practice of doing art helps people to “think outside of the box” and to become creative problem solvers. Creating art calms the mind and opens one to using the mind more intelligently.
Much research has been done on the creative process, flow, and “thinking outside of the box”. A research study, from Harvard University, Project Zero, identified “8 Studio Habits of Mind” that artists use while working in their studios to create art.
The findings of the Harvard study show that the “Studio Habits of Mind” that artists use in their studios are the same thought processes that all creative types of people utilize to come up with solutions to problems and to uncover new ideas. Scientists use these thought processes while searching for new scientific discoveries in the lab. Inventors, writers, poets, innovative business leaders, musicians, composers, choreographers, filmmakers, and engineers all use those same thought processes. People like Steve Jobs, Thomas Edison, Mozart, Madam Currie, Matisse, Anne Lamott, George Sand, are examples of people who have used their creative minds to the fullest.
